Deborah Ross is running for an open seat after court-ordered redistricting in North Carolina to counter gerrymandering. She is a veteran of the state legislature; elected to the North Carolina House of Representatives, she served as both the Majority and Minority Whip.
In 2016, Ross ran for U.S. Senate with the enthusiastic backing of Council for a Livable World, but lost to incumbent Richard Burr (R), who won with 51% of the vote.
Ross has also served as executive director of the state American Civil Liberties Union, taught at Duke Law School and worked as legal counsel to the area transit agency.
This year she is running against a retired Amy veteran in a district which has chosen Members of Congress from both parties in the past, but with the new lines, is definitely favored.
Ross opposes the new nuclear weapons systems advocated by the Trump administration and supports extension of the New START nuclear weapons treaty. She has declared, “We must be a country that lives up to its word. I do not support the Trump administration’s decisions to withdraw from international agreements unilaterally.”
