Help ClimateTruth.org raise the voices of climate survivors!

Goal thermometer

The climate silence was finally broken at Wednesday night’s GOP debate. After climate change was not mentioned during the first GOP debate, ClimateTruth.org members flooded CNN with questions about climate change, and CNN moderator, Jake Tapper listened. In fact, he highlighted our efforts directly, stating "We received a lot of questions from social media about climate change." It is thanks to you that we broke through the noise and put this issue on the agenda. We believe this is an important moment to share our strategy going forward.

Not only did CNN listen to our call to action, but the debate represented a subtle yet extremely important step for the climate movement. Thanks to all our ongoing efforts, the candidates addressed were forced to accept the premise that the climate is changing. Senator Marco Rubio, Governor Chris Christie, and Governor Scott Walker all spoke on climate without questioning the scientific consensus or using worn-out lines like “the climate is always changing.”  While some, like Senator Ted Cruz, will still choose outright denial, other Republican candidates are beginning to realize that denying the science and the opinion of the vast majority of voters comes at a political cost.

Instead of denying the science, Rubio went in a different, but equally wrong direction: "We're not going to destroy our economy the way the left-wing government we're under wants to do. Every proposal they put forward will make it harder to do business in America...” The argument that asserting climate change will destroy our economy is just as dangerous as denying the science, and just as important to counter with the facts.

We have come a long way, and reached an important crossroads. Denial is starting to morph from denial of science to denial of solutions and action. As denial changes forms, so must our strategies to combat it. We are ready to rise the challenge, but we need our members’ support behind us to show climate deniers that it takes more than deep pockets to win when you have the majority of American people and the truth on your side.

Moving forward it’s going to be even harder to fight denial, and fighting it will require greater resources, will you chip in to help us build momentum in this pivotal moment?
