We Tackle Food Apartheid

CFHE addresses and remediates what, at its core, starts as food apartheidism– geographies with increased barriers to food access due to the systematic disinvestment by government and private entities, patterned along racial lines. This can range from the disinvestment in affordable housing, urban flight from inner-city neighborhoods, to supermarket bias against establishing outlets in Black and Hispanic neighborhoods. Such systematic disinvestment, patterned along racial lines, creates insidious inequities in the access to nutritious and culturally appropriate food, healthcare, and wellness services.

How We Work

  • Ujamaa Cafe community fridge program - A physical health café and grab-and-go vending machines with breakfast, lunch, and beverage options sourced from CFHE’s local neighborhood restaurant affiliates. Ujamaa Cafe fridge units are put on-site in food pantries, community centers, health clinics, medical centers, nonprofits & youth organizations to support neighborhood revitalization at the intersection of health and food equity.
  • Ujamaa Well - A first-of-its-kind integrated health pilot program that takes an empowerment-based approach to support Black women's health goals, considering women's historical experiences in America and the generational, familial, community, and economic barriers that contribute to their health.
  • Eating Better Together - A youth and family program to improve oral hygiene, increase nutrition literacy, and overall health by intercepting food insecurity and improving nutrition among low-income BIPOC families in partnership with local dentists.
  • The Hunger Program - A free weekly meal delivery program providing customized healthy meals to clients' dietary needs. Our program is designed to reduce food insecurity and increase health. All meals are delivered directly to clients' doorsteps via Doordash.

Who We Serve

Through our partnerships, programs, and model, CFHE directly serves low-income seniors, persons with disabilities, and homeless individuals, as well as women, children, and families. The majority (more than 75%) are individuals of color and immigrant families across 6 New Jersey counties and within Philadelphia, PA.
