Columbia University, a private Ivy League research university in New York City, is trying to sweep under the rug its plans to kick out the Red Balloon, a beloved community preschool for the past 50 years.
Despite getting pressure from members of Color Of Change like you, the local community, and the parents, Columbia is continuing to ignore and downplay their part in potentially closing an early childhood education center.
The Red Balloon is the only Columbia-affiliated child-care center that accepts tuition vouchers from the city’s Administration for Children’s Services which assists families in need, making this a clear economic justice issue. Furthermore, about 60 percent of the students are children of color. If the Red Balloon is forced to turn in its keys and close, Columbia University is effectively turning its back on these children and their bright futures.
We’re planning a massive rally to deliver petition signatures and show Columbia University President Lee Bollinger that the community is behind the Red Balloon Preschool.
Can we count on you to show up for preschoolers and donate $25 or more to help save the Red Balloon Preschool before time runs out?
