Congressman Shomari C. Figures represents Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District, a place he has always called home. Raised in his grandfather’s church and educated from kindergarten through law school in Alabama, Shomari was inspired by his parents’ legacy of public service.
His father, the late State Senator Michael Figures, was a civil rights attorney who fought for Black representation and successfully led the lawsuit that bankrupted the Klan after a 1981 lynching in Mobile. His mother, State Senator Vivian Figures, has spent decades championing women’s rights, education, and healthcare.
Shomari attended the University of Alabama before earning his law degree there. His career in public service includes roles in the White House under President Obama, at the Department of Justice with Attorney General Loretta Lynch, and as an advisor in Congress. He played a key role in implementing the Affordable Care Act, advancing civil rights, and shaping policies on education, labor, health, and policing. Most recently, he served as Deputy Chief of Staff and Counselor to Attorney General Merrick Garland.
Shomari is committed to using his experience to improve the lives of all Alabamians. He lives with his wife, Dr. Kalisha Dessources Figures, and their three children.
