I believe we must boldly demand both safety and fairness. My office has over a 95 percent conviction rate for violent crimes. We have also reduced mass incarceration in Nashville by cutting the jail population by more than 50 percent through common sense solutions and alternatives to incarceration for addiction, mental health and poverty when jail is not the answer.


I've also created the first and only Conviction Review Unit in the State of Tennessee that has exonerated five individuals who were charged with crimes they did not commit. People like Joyce Watkins who was just featured in the above story by CBS Sunday Morning.
