I've spent the past year and a half coordinating a coalition of 135 labor, environmental, and community groups across New York State, campaigning to pass bold and equitable laws to fight climate change, create middle-class jobs in renewable energy, and protect those communities most vulnerable to climate impacts. Sunrise is one of the organizations in that coalition I'm consistently most inspired by.
Sunrise is a organizing an army of young people to make climate change an urgent priority across America, end the corrupting influence of fossil fuel executives on our politics, and elect leaders who stand up for the health and wellbeing of all people. For example, just this past November, I joined over 1000 young people who gathered in 25 cities and towns to dedicate Climate Legacy Time Capsules and commit to fighting for a better future as the the first UN climate talks of the Trump era came to a close. We wrote our own climate legacy and let our politicians know that if they continue to drag us backwards, we will be the generation to step up and lead our country forward. Now, Sunrise is gearing up for 2018, when they’ll be supporting 300 young organizers across the country as they work in critical mid-term elections to kick out politicians in the pocket of fossil fuel CEOs, and elect leaders who will fight for all of us and our shared home.
Across the movement, we’re hoping to raise $25,000 to support Sunrise's work before the end of the year, and personally I’m hoping to raise $500.
After a year of unprecedented hurricanes and wildfires, with a federal goverment refusing to even acknowledge the problem, it's easy to feel overwhelmed by climate change. But the young people that make up Sunrise are a real reason for hope.
Your help is sincerely appreciate, and deeply important.
Yours,
Dan
