Data for Black Lives

Help Us Build a Movement of Scientists and Activists

Where we are headed as a society we have never been before. We must decide: do we continue to use technology as an instrument of oppression or do we work to unleash the true potential of data and technology to uplift and empower. Data for Black Lives is a movement of activists, organizers, data scientists, and researchers committed to the mission of using data science to create concrete and measurable change in the lives of Black people.

We launched our organization in 2017 with a groundbreaking conference at the MIT Media Lab. Over 400 people convened in Cambridge, Massachusetts to chart out a new future for data science as it impacts Black communities. Thousands more tuned in online.

Two sold-out conferences later, we are the largest national network of scientists and activists working side by side for racial justice. And every day, our movement continues to grow.

We need your support to fund our ongoing work, including:

  • Organizing our third annual conference, Data for Black Lives III, scheduled for December 2020.
  • Regular webinars, trainings, and regional gatherings to support grassroots organizers working on the frontlines of Black communities with the technical tools and data resources that they need.
  • Advocating on the local, state, and federal level for true accountability and transparency in automated decision-making
  • Building a app-based platform to connect activists and organizers with data scientists and researchers
  • Working with stakeholders to build a public data trust of anonymized data for researchers and activists working for the public good.

For us, this is about more than just data. This is about fighting new forms of racism and discrimination enabled by technology and unleashing the true potential of data to uplift and empower communities. Join our movement!
