Defund the NYPD!

Carry the BLM Fight Forward

In support of Black Lives Matter and against the police forces that murdered George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Eric Garner, Akai Gurley, Layleen Polanco, Delrawn Small, Saheed Vassell, Ahmaud Arbery and countless other Black and brown people, New York City stood up last summer in an unprecedented movement for justice.

In one clear voice, the movement demanded that the Mayor and City Council cut the NYPD’s bloated budget by at least a billion dollars. All we got was sleight-of-hand and empty rhetoric. While the Mayor and most of City Council are on their ignominious way out, the struggle continues.

Since the budget passed, the NYC-DSA Racial Justice Working Group has organized marches, rallies, and direct actions; crafted a detailed policy vision of where and how to defund police and refund communities; talked to our neighbors at weekly tabling events; spread political education across NYC-DSA and beyond; phone banked and petitioned for our endorsed candidates; testified at public hearings; and lots more. Now, our volunteer-run organization just elected a new, majority-Black Organizing Committee, and we plan to expand our capacity like never before!

The funds we raise will be used to support our ongoing #DefundNYPD Campaign and to launch new campaigns, events, and organizing projects to build our collective power and dismantle systemic racism in New York City and beyond. These expenses include:

  • Posters, banners, signs, art materials, sound equipment, and other expenses for direct actions, marches, and rallies
  • Printing costs for one-pagers, fliers, and other informational handouts for actions, canvassing, and weekly tables in Harlem, Queens, and North, Central, and South Brooklyn
  • Technical infrastructure and platforms to support our organizing and expand our outreach

With your help, we will keep taking it to the streets, pressuring our elected representatives, talking to our neighbors, learning from the most impacted communities, spreading political education, and working to fight racism and build socialism right here in our neighborhoods.
