Public Access Democracy
To most of us, democracy means elections. But the influence of moneyed interests has so distorted electoral democracy's functioning that it has become almost impossible to implement rational policies that benefit a majority of Americans. Worse, citizens disengage as voter apathy increases.
Public Access Democracy seeks to transfuse citizen engagement by investing political power in deliberative citizen groups chosen by lot -- just as juries are. It's not a plan to get money out of politics. It's a plan to get politics out of democracy.
We've begun by campaigning for better systems at local, non-legislative levels: neighborhood councils, COG advisory bodies. Next step, better systems at local legislative levels: small city councils, COG Councils. Long range, we'll work for better systems at all levels of legislation.
