The Timber fire grew significantly over the weekend, causing more damage and evacuations. Can you please chip in any amount to help the Big Sur community?

URGENT: The Timber fire burning in Big Sur, California, grew significantly over the weekend. More warnings and evacuation orders have been issued.

A vast amount of land — 12,616 acres — has burned as of Monday morning. Cal Fire reports that containment is only at 25%.

The fire started on August 8 in the Los Padres National Forest about 100 miles south of San Jose. It forced evacuations across Monterey County and the closure of a section of Highway 1, the beloved coastal route that runs through Big Sur.

The area is home to tribal lands, historical landmarks, and one-of-a-kind views of the Pacific Ocean. The local economy depends on the millions of tourists who come each year, but cannot visit now.

The evacuations, damage to property, and loss of income because of the fire is only the most recent struggle for the residents in Big Sur.

Highway 1, the main way to get in and out of Big Sur, has been closed several times because of natural disasters, including when a landslide in 2024 caused a nearly seven-mile section to be closed for almost two years. Because of this, Big Sur's residents have even had to stock up with canned foods and powdered milk.

The people of Big Sur need our help right now.

Our organization, DFA, is collecting funds for charities working on the ground in Big Sur. These charities are providing food, shelter, and other immediate relief, as well as organizing long-term recovery efforts for the Big Sur community.

Please, will you chip in whatever you can to help residents of Big Sur?
