Matt Hughes is a life-long resident of Orange County. He has served on the Hillsborough Board of Commissioners since April 2018 after being appointed to fill a term. As Commissioner, he has supported efforts to make policing more accountable, support the movement for Black lives, promote affordable housing, and extend non-discrimination laws at the local level. As a young queer, Black elected official he understands that having folks from diverse perspectives at the table are critically important.
Matt is running because he wants to unlock the ability of local governments to have home rule to legislate on these issues. He is also running because he believes that the state government needs to go on the offensive on affordable housing, raising the minimum wage, investing in education, and taxing the wealthy so they pay their fair share.
