Support Alex Padilla and Democracy For America

The proud son of immigrants from Mexico, Alex Padilla became involved in politics shortly after graduating from MIT. He joined protests against California’s Proposition 187, which sought to deny public benefits to immigrants. He was elected to the Los Angeles City Council in 1999 at the age of 26, and served as the youngest-ever City Council President. He was elected to California’s State Senate in 2006 and served two terms then became the first Latino in California history to be elected Secretary of State in 2014. He was appointed in 2020 to the U.S. Senate by Governor Newsom, to fill now-Vice President Kamala Harris’ seat.

As California's Secretary of State, he worked to increase access to the ballot box for all Californians. He expand voting rights through voter education, automatic voter registration, vote-by-mail, same day voter registration, pre-registration of 16 and 17-year olds, early voting, and the restoration of voting rights for those with criminal histories. As a U.S. Senator, he is championing these same reforms at the federal level.

Padilla is also committed to building an economy that uplifts our working families. He has fought for a $15 minimum federal wage, as well as legislation that brings down drug prices; expands childcare benefits, and makes the child tax credit permanent. He supports President Biden’s Billionaire Minimum Income Tax, because he believes we can only fight growing inequalities by ensuring the wealthy are paying their fair share.
