The UFW Foundation is launching a Farmworker Disaster Relief Fund, which will provide short-term assistance to help bridge significant strain farm workers experience as a result of a catastrophic event. This fund will direct additional resources to farm worker communities impacted by weather disasters such as heat, winter storms, flooding, wildfires, or infectious disease. Our Disaster Relief Fund will provide assistance for unexpected emergencies through in-person resource events that may include:
Recently severe rain, wind, and flash floods saturated the west coast, with many under evacuation warnings. Vulnerable farm worker communities are experiencing their basic needs burdened by closed roads, power outages, food insecurity, flooding, mudslides, and destroyed structures at home and work.
Essential farmworkers continue working out in the rain, wind, and mud, picking fruit and vegetables to earn a living for their families. Unfortunately, weather disasters cause a pause in their employment, and their income has been placed on hold. Additionally, undocumented farmworkers don’t qualify for disaster relief from FEMA or other government programs with a citizenship requirement.
Every donated dollar to this fund will be tracked, and a report on how much was raised and how dollars were programmed will be released in our annual report in 2024. Our goal is to grow this fund towards the capacity to provide emergency financial assistance grants for farm workers experiencing extreme hardships, such as losing their house or a family member to a disaster.

Thank you for joining us in growing this fund and enabling us to respond to disasters at a moment’s notice to help our communities recover.
