Republicans currently hold the narrowest of edges in Virginia's state Senate: 21 seats to the Democrats' 19. In November of 2019, all 40 seats will be up for election, and because the lieutenant governor can break ties in their favor, Democrats only need to pick up ONE district from the GOP to take back the Senate.

But we have to do a bunch of things right to make sure we remain in position to flip the Senate next year. First up: Win a special election on Jan. 8 for a Democratic seat in Northern Virginia that just became vacant because the incumbent won a seat in Congress.

Fortunately, we have an excellent candidate running here in Del. Jennifer Boysko. But we can't take anything for granted: Five years ago, when this seat last became open in a special election, Democrats won with just 52 percent of the vote.

If we win, then we head into November with the GOP's ultra-slim 21-19 edge intact. But if we lose, then Republicans will increase their advantage to 22-18, making our task of winning back the chamber twice as hard.

We have an amazing opportunity to turn Virginia solid blue in 2019, but it starts by keeping it blue now.
