Goal thermometer

The 2018 midterms were only a few months ago, but we already have another opportunity to flip a Republican seat—and we have a great candidate who can get the job done on April 2.

Pam Iovino is a 23-year Navy veteran who retired with the rank of captain, but her service to her country didn't end there. She then went to work for the VA, where she became an advocate for our nation's 25 million veterans on Capitol Hill. She's a devoted public servant in every way, and now she's continuing her work by running for Pennsylvania's vacant 37th State Senate District in the Pittsburgh suburbs.

Iovino would be a welcome change. Pennsylvania Republicans, thanks to gerrymandered maps, have abused their power for years. But in 2018, they finally began to pay the price and saw their 17-seat majority in the state Senate get sliced down to just seven. If Iovino wins, that'll get cut to six.

If that happens, then Democrats will need to flip just three seats next year—when half of the Senate is up—in order to take control of the chamber for the first time since 1994. If Democrats can retake the state House, too, that would spell an end to GOP gerrymandering and the beginning of a new progressive era in the Keystone State.

But it all starts with Pam Iovino and the special election for the 37th District, which is fast approaching on April 2.
