Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard is badly out of step with mainstream progressive values. She's refused to criticize Trump, hasn't signed on to an assault weapons ban, cozied up to Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad, attacked Barack Obama for refusing to use the phrase "radical Islamic terrorism," and voted to make it all but impossible for Syrian refugees to settle in the U.S.—among many other things.
Fortunately, there's a far better choice. State Sen. Kai Kahele is a combat pilot in the Air National Guard who's flown missions in Iraq and Afghanistan and ran a nonprofit serving rural Native Hawaiian families. Most importantly, he's a solid progressive who backs Medicare for All and a Green New Deal.
Gabbard for some reason is still running for president, though no one knows why. She said she won't seek re-election, but she has until the candidate filing deadline on June 2 to change her mind, so it's very possible she could change her mind.
But if she does belatedly decide to run for another term, we need to head her off at the pass. Hawaii's 2nd Congressional District is deep blue, and its representative should reflect that fact. Kahele will be just that sort of congressman.
