The Supreme Court's evisceration of abortion rights has moved the battleground to the states, and now abortion is on the ballot—literally.
The good news: We just won a smashing success defending abortion rights in dark-red Kansas, of all places, turning back an effort to strip the right to an abortion from the state constitution in a massive 59-41 landslide.
But the fight goes on.
In Kentucky, an amendment similar to the one in Kansas will appear on the ballot in November. There, the state courts have temporarily blocked a total ban on abortion, but if this amendment becomes law, then the courts will be powerless to intervene.
And in Michigan, activists are very close to putting a measure on the ballot this fall that would amend the state constitution to include an affirmative right to an abortion. A 1931 state law banning abortion has been blocked for the moment by the courts, but it could come back into effect—and Republican lawmakers are eager to let that happen. This amendment would render that 91-year-old law a dead letter.
If we succeed in these states, we will protect a fundamental right for millions of people. If we fail, countless more will be plunged into darkness.
