Super-rich GOP Rep. Darrell Issa is one of the most vulnerable Republicans in the House. Last year, he only barely won re-election against an unheralded opponent by a mere 0.5 percent margin—the closest House race in the nation.
What’s more, California’s 49th District, which is based in the San Diego suburbs, had long been a conservative seat, but it reacted with great hostility toward Trump: Mitt Romney carried the district 52-46 but it swung sharply toward Hillary Clinton, who won it 51-43.
But Issa can afford to spend millions of dollars of his own money on his campaign, just as he did last year. Whoever emerges as the Democratic nominee will still need a lot of help.
