Progressives have another chance to flip a key U.S. House seat from red to blue before November. On Aug. 7, voters will elect a new member of Congress in Ohio’s 12th Congressional District. This is the first time the seat has been open since 2000, and Daily Kos is pleased to endorse Democrat Danny O’Connor in this special election.

O’Connor has deep roots in Ohio and has served as Franklin County Recorder since 2016, where he swiftly instituted reforms to make the office more helpful to homeowners, veterans, and the homeless. Additionally, by creating the Recorder’s Office’s first paid family leave program, he made the department itself a workplace that supports working families.

Republicans have opted to run a career politician with loads of right-wing baggage against a 31-year-old small business owner and proven progressive reformer. Congress has more than its fair share of the latter, and O’Connor represents the kind of change voters are clearly hungry for this cycle.
