On April 6, Tennessee state House Republicans voted to expel Democratic Reps. Justin Jones and Justin Pearson, both Black men, for protesting for gun control following the Nashville school shooting that killed three 9-year-old children and three adults. They declined to expel Rep. Gloria Johnson, a white woman, who also participated in the protest. This was only the 3rd time since the Civil War that members have been expelled from the TN state legislature.


As Daily Kos staff writer Laura Clawson writes, “Once Republicans lower the bar enough to convince themselves it’s reasonable to expel people for chanting out of order, or to swoop in and redo a city’s government for rebuffing a Republican event, what other excuses do you think they’re going to suddenly start finding to strip power from more and more Democrats?”


The altering of reality and the truth are one of the primary ways that fascist and other authoritarian regimes obtain and keep power. From Florida to Tennessee to Oklahoma, Republicans are turning their states and localities laboratories for fascism and autocracy. As Republicans continue their fascist attacks on our democracy, we fight back.
