Freedom Summer 2026

The South is not a lost cause - it is the front-line in our fight for democracy - just like it was in the 1860s. At Donuts + Democracy, we have always supported youth organizers in the South - including North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Louisiana, and Texas. In the wake of SCOTUS gutting the Voting Rights Act, we are scaling up our efforts and programs to do more events in the South through the summer and fall. We are also expanding to Mississippi and Florida. We are supporting the voter registration work of NAACP Youth and College Division organizers and other youth organizations that are on the ground registering and mobilizing Black voters because it is the right thing to do and the smart thing to do. As W.E.B. Du Bois said, “As the South goes, so goes the nation.” It was true then and it is true now.  

Young voters have the power to determine elections and their future if they turnout to vote, but outdated strategies often fail to reach them. At Donuts + Democracy, we build sustainable civic engagement with a simple, cost-effective approach: partnering with student organizers on college and high school campuses nationwide by providing donuts to start conversations about the issues that matter most to young people.  

Your investment in Donuts+Democracy is a force multiplier. Student organizers are already mobilizing their peers—adding donuts transforms their efforts and increase voter engagement by 10X on average. There is no youth GOTV strategy that is more cost-effective and more fun than donuts on college campuses.
