Being born and raised in Richmond, California the home of the Chevron Refinery , the single biggest point source of pollution in the state of California and witnessing first hand the many fires and accidents at the Chevron Refinery over my 40+ years of living here has led me to become a food, social, environmental and climate justice activist. I believe we are at a critical moment in the Climate Movement where fence line communities like Richmond could lead the way by piloting new policies and initiatives meant to set a powerful example and help move the country more concerted towards the Just Transition we need.
For over 20 years, I have been working in coalition to explore ways the City of Richmond can transition away from a fossil fuel economy to a green economy and address the suffering residents' experience from contamination and air pollution caused by the Chevron refinery.
Now, I am running for Richmond City Council to make sure Climate Resilience, Climate Adaptation Planning and Climate Policy become central priorities for the City over the next 4 years. It is time for fence line communities like Richmond to show the way by bringing forward the community based initiatives and leaders we need to move us towards Just Transition.
I am also passionate about making our community a place where children and families can safely walk to school and parks, where residents have a chance to work in well-paying satisfying jobs, and where everyone has access to shelter, health and social service support they need to thrive and support their families.
Governor Gavin Newsom has confidence in my abilities and appointed me to the California State Food and Agriculture Commission where I’m working to increase access to healthy foods in communities like ours.
I’d be honored to have your support.
