In November 2024, Austin Bruckner Carrillo was elected to the Hayward School Board with 18,762 votes. He was the only candidate endorsed by all of organized labor and every Democratic group —without exception—reflecting a broad, worker-led, progressive coalition. His win marked the first time a non-incumbent unseated the city’s longest-serving conservative, despite the smear tactics too often aimed at LGBTQIA+ candidates.
Prior to Austin's election, HUSD transitioned to district-based election. In 2026, Hayward will election two new School Board Trustees through the district-based elections process.
While this change poses a great opportunity to elect Trustees that will best support our students, families and educators, we also risk a more conservative shift that could harm public education in our community.
Winning campaigns take tremendous resources -- both in volunteer hours and financial support.
Join Austin Bruckner Carrillo for his second annual Drag In the New Year Fundraiser to elect champions of public education.
