Honor Senator Reid's Legacy to Dream Big

In Lieu of Flowers

In lieu of customary remembrances, the Reid family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions in Senator Reid’s honor be directed to the donor’s choice of the following Nevada charities: Encircle Las Vegas, Nevada Coalition for Suicide Prevention (NCSP), Dream Big Nevada.

Our Founder and Executive Director, Astrid Silva first met Senator Reid when he was one of the most powerful people in the United States, he was the first person she heard talk about DREAMers. It was at a time where she didn’t feel powerful, instead felt powerless. Her Abuelita Mica had passed away and she wasn’t able to be with her because she was undocumented. She then did the only thing she could think of doing: She wrote Senator Reid a letter. In the letter, she spoke to him about Abuelita Mica and the pain felt at not being able to be with her in her final days. She poured my heart out in that letter without knowing if he would even read it. But he did. He read the letter and with it, began a friendship Astrid could never have dreamed of.

As time went on, he became more than a powerful Senator, he became a confidant, he took on the role of being her Abuelito– whom she could trust with her dreams and fears. He would listen, give advice, tell stories, all the things a grandfather would do. For many years, and well beyond his time as Senator, Abue fought for Astrid and for others like her. Everywhere he went, he carried their stories with him. That’s a lesson he taught us early on–when you’re in any position where you have the opportunity to bring others in, you bring them. Nevada may never know someone like Harry Mason Reid again, we certainly won’t.

We will treasure his memory, his lessons, and everything he stood for in his long career but above all else we will treasure him for being Astrid's Abue, for caring and showing her kindness when she was just a girl grieving her abuelita. He used to always end their conversations by telling her to “dream big” and that’s what we’ll do, we'll forever dream big for Abue and for our community.

DREAM BIG NEVADA was established in 2017 to provide aid to Nevada’s immigrant families through direct services and by empowering community members to advocate for themselves and others in similar situations. Pictured above is Senator Reid at our office ribbon cutting in 2019.
