Joe Neguse is an attorney, civic leader, and public servant. He has given a lifetime of work for families across Colorado.
Joe Neguse is the former Colorado Univ (CU) Regent for CD2 and co-founder of the New Era Colorado, a non-profit in Colorado that registers voters and promotes progressive legislations in Colorado.
Joe Neguse is a naturalized US Citizen and first generation American. He is a son of refugees from Eritrea, a war-torn country in East Africa. His parents arrived in the US as refugees and eventually settled in Colorado. 34-year-young Joe appreciates the shot he got at the American dream that is now threatened.
Joe earned his bachelor's (summa cum laude) from Univ. of Colorado at Boulder. He then worked for Colorado state House Rep. Andrew Romanoff. Joe co-founded New Era Colorado, the state's largest youth voter registration and mobilization non-profit in Colorado, which has been featured in New York Times and Time Magazine; since then the organization has registered over 150,000 young voters statewide. The organization also led/influenced successful passage of progressive legislation at the stte level (including online voter registration and 16/17 year-old voter re-registration). Further, Joe has led the fight locally against climate change.
Joe earned his JD from Colorado Univ (CU). In 2008, while still at law school at CU, Joe was elected by the voters of CD2 to serve on the CU Board of Regents, becoming only the second african-American to be elected Regent in Colorado's history. Joe served a six-year term on the Board of CU-system. The Board oversees the CU-system, the fourth largest employer in the state, with an operating budget of $3.4 billion. During the period, Joe served for two years as the Chair of the Audit Committee. As a Regent, Joe Neguse fought to make higher education more affordable and accessible, and healthcare more available and affordable to students.
At age 31, Joe was appointed to lead Colorado's consumer protection agency. He led the department - an agency of ~600 employees, $90M budget - for two years, leading the fight to expand economic opportunities, protect civil rights, and strengthen consumer protections and safeguards.
Joe has lived in CD2 for the past 15 years. Joe and his wife Andrea (who grew up in Broomfield) live in the City of Lafayette.
Joe Neguse is a strong Democrat committed to the Democratic party platform. He is inspirational as he talks about the future that the party platform envisions as well.
Joe Neguse is endorsed by VP Joe Biden, who said that Joe Neguse is the "embodiment of the American dream".
