Sean Casten (D) is the current representative from Illinois' 6th congressional district (IL-06), first elected in 2018.


Sean Casten is a respected scientist, engineer and entrepreneur. He is a leader in the field of clean energy.


Sean earned his BA in Molecular biology and Biochemistry from Middlebury College, and Masters in Engineering Management and MS in Biochemical Engineering from Dartmouth College. For his MS thesis he focused on technologies to produce fuel-grade ethanol from cellulose feedstocks.


Between 1997-2000, Sean was a consultant in a private energy specialists practice, where he worked on both public and private sector clients' projects.


In 2000, Sean Casten bought and became CEO of Turbosteam Corp, a manufacturer of custom-built heat and power plants. During his tenure, the company sold/installed/commissioned 70+ individual power plants throughout the US and Asia.


In 2007, Sean Casten moved to Illinois to co-found with his father, Recycled Energy Development LLC (RED), with a stated goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through various technologies and recovery of wasted energy. Under Sean's leadership, the company developed 300 MW of assets that provide heating, chilling, electricity and waste water treatment services to 60+ municipalities in CA, NJ, MA, NY - under 20+ contracts. In 2016, the company was sold. Sean Casten tweeted "In the last 10 years, I built an $80M business to profitably reduce CO2 emissions. If Peter Roskam wants to make this a race about who knows best how to get things done, he should start freshening up his LinkedIn profile."


Sean Casten was recognized in 2005 by USCHPA as the "CHP Champion" for his advocacy work to promote use of clean, efficient heat an dpower generation, and in 2009 as "Emeging Leader" by the Chicago Council on Global Affairs.  


Sean Casten, wife Kara and two kids (in local public school) live in the district in Downers Grove. He is ana avid runner and biker who has completed ten marathons and represented Team USA in international 10k run, 150k bike ride and a 30k run. He is also a youth soccer coach locally and plays in local cover bands.
