Josh Stein is a prominent lawyer and politician, currently serving as the Attorney General of North Carolina, a role he has held since 2017. As a Democrat, Stein has a strong track record of taking on powerful interests to protect the people of North Carolina.


Stein attended Dartmouth College for his undergraduate studies, followed by dual degrees from Harvard Law School and Harvard Kennedy School of Government.


Before becoming Attorney General, Stein served as a North Carolina State Senator from 2009 to 2016, representing the 16th district. During his tenure, he was known for his work on economic development, consumer protection, and environmental issues. As Attorney General, Stein has continued to focus on these areas, with notable achievements including:


  • Opioid Crisis: Stein played a pivotal role in securing more than $50 billion nationally to support opioid addiction treatment and recovery services, helping address the devastating impact of the opioid crisis in North Carolina.
  • Justice for Sexual Assault Victims: He spearheaded efforts to tackle the largest backlog of untested rape kits in the United States, ensuring that justice is served for victims of sexual assault by bringing perpetrators to account.
  • Consumer Protection: Stein held e-cigarette manufacturer Juul accountable for its role in the teen vaping epidemic, winning a $40 million settlement aimed at helping young people overcome nicotine addiction.
  • Environmental Advocacy: He led efforts to negotiate the largest coal ash cleanup in U.S. history, securing a more than $1.1 billion settlement from Duke Energy to ensure the cleanup costs were borne by the polluters.


Stein is a strong advocate for reproductive rights, having consistently defended women’s access to healthcare. He is also a proponent of voting rights, working to ensure that all North Carolinians have fair access to the ballot. His platform for Governor emphasizes creating safer communities, improving public education, promoting healthier families, and protecting individual freedoms.


Stein resides in Raleigh, North Carolina, with his wife, Anna, and their three children.
