Roy Asberry Cooper III (born June 13, 1957, in Nashville, North Carolina) is a seasoned public servant, attorney, and educator. After earning both his B.A. (1979) and J.D. (1982) from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he practiced law at his family firm before being appointed to the State Goals and Policy Board by then-Governor Jim Hunt.
Cooper’s political journey began with legislative service in the North Carolina House (1987–1991) and Senate (1991–2001), followed by nearly 16 years as the state’s Attorney General—holding the record for longest tenure in that role . In 2017, he was sworn in as the 75th Governor of North Carolina, serving two terms through January 1, 2025.
During his tenure, Cooper prioritized expanding Medicaid, strengthening education, and improving healthcare coverage, and he navigated ongoing conflicts with a Republican-controlled General Assembly—issuing numerous vetoes to uphold executive authority . One of his signature accomplishments was the successful passage of Medicaid expansion in 2023, which enabled coverage for over 600,000 low-income North Carolinians.
On the personal side, Cooper and his wife, Kristin, are proud parents of three daughters, all UNC–Chapel Hill graduates. He has served in various church leadership roles and continues his commitment to public service, having accepted a teaching position at Harvard University following his governorship . Cooper declared his candidacy for the U.S. Senate in 2026, aiming to bring his experience and leadership to the federal level.
