Tom Malinowski (D) is the current representative from New Jersey's 7th congressional district (NJ-07), first elected in 2018.


Tom Malinowski is a Diplomat, a human rights advocate, National Security expert during Clinton Administration, State Department Diplomat during Obama Administration. Tom is a former executive at the Human Rights Watch, a Rhodes Scholar, and a good lobbyist who worked to uphold human rights, government sanctions, and rights of labor.


Born in Poland, Tom was a kid (age 6) when he arrived in the US with his mom, as a refugees from communism/cold war. They settled in NJ where he grew up near Princeton, an avid sportsman during school years.


Tom was inspired to serve in public offices by his dad (a journalist and champion of progressive causes) and his mom, a female leader who served in the NJ Senate.


Tom Malinowski earned his BA (Political Science) from Univ of California Berkeley (1987) and his Master of Philosophy from Oxford univ (with Rhodes Scholarship) (1991). In between, Tom Malinowski was Special Assistant for Sen. Pat Moynihan (1988).


In 1991, Tom Malinowski joined President Clinton's National Security Council, focused on strengthening NATO and ending the then wars in the Balkans.


2001-2013: Tom Malinowski was the Director for Human Rights Watch, one of the leading organizations worldwide in standing up for democratic values and social justice.


In September 2013, President Obama nominated Tom Malinowski to serve as Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor. Tom was confirmed by the U.S. Senate in April 2014, with bipartisan praise for his efforts to eradicate torture.


During his tenure with the State Department, Tom Malinowski led efforts to assist persecuted religious minorities targeted by ISIS in Iraq, oversaw efforts to sanction N. Korea for human rights abuses and to increase their free flow of uncensored information.


Tom Malinowski led State Dept's efforts to defend the LGBT community around the world and oversaw the appointment of the first Special Envoy for LGBT rights.


Tom Malinowski backed the United Nations efforts to investigate possible war crimes committed during the Sri Lankan Civil War. Tom also worked on reducing civilian casualties from US military operations in the Middle East and assisted with sanctioning Russian officials for human rights abuses.


Tom Malinowski is who New York Times once referred to as The Good Lobbyist at a time when President Obama requested a procedural waiver for his good lobbying work for his proposed appointment in the State Dept.


Following the end of Tom Malinowski's tenure at the State Dept, Tom joined a fellow former Obama official to lobby congress in an effort to prevent the Trump administration from lifting the sanctions on Russia following its invasion of Ukraine.
