A Navy veteran, former federal prosecutor, and dedicated public servant, Mikie Sherril is running to make life more affordable and equitable for families across the Garden State. With a career defined by service and a track record of delivering results, Mikie brings the leadership, integrity, and experience New Jersey needs.
Born in Alexandria, Virginia, Mikie Sherrill graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1994 and served nearly a decade in the Navy as a Sea King helicopter pilot. She flew missions throughout Europe and the Middle East, worked on the Battle Watch Floor during the Iraq invasion, and served as a Flag Aide to the Deputy Commander in Chief of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet. She also served as a Russian policy officer, overseeing nuclear treaty obligations and U.S.-Russia naval relations .
After her military service, Mikie earned a master’s degree in global history from the London School of Economics and a law degree from Georgetown University. She worked as an attorney before joining the U.S. Attorney’s Office in New Jersey, where she developed reentry programs to reduce recidivism and served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney prosecuting federal cases .
In 2018, Mikie flipped New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District from Republican control and has been reelected since, serving on the House Armed Services Committee and the Select Committee on Strategic Competition Between the U.S. and the Chinese Communist Party .
Mikie lives in Montclair with her husband, Jason Hedberg, also a Naval Academy graduate and former Navy intelligence officer, and their four children.
