Previously, Sylvia Garcia was Texas State Senator. She is a native of Palito Blanco, a South Texas farming community, where she grew up.. 8th of ten children, learning hard work from parents and staying focused on education and excelling in school. Her parents instilled in Sylvia, a strong belief in the potential of the children of Texas.


Sylvia Garcia earned her degree in social work and political science from Texas Woman's University in Denton (with scholarship), and her JD from Texas Southern Univ, Houston (working several jobs to pay tuition).  


Sylvia Garcia served as Director and Presiding Judge of the Houston Municipal System for (an unprecedented) five terms under two mayors, earning reputation as the taxpayers' watchdog as she fought to protect the hard-earned money of working families and promoting transparency and accountability from the City management.


Sylvia Garcia served two terms as Controller and ten was elected to the Harris County Commissioner's Court. She was the first Hispanic and first woman to be elected in her own right to this office. There she continued her advocacy for working families and fought for the defenseless.


In March 2013, Sylvia Garcia became the Texas State Senator for TX-Senate District 6 (TX-SD-06). She was the seventh woman and third Hispanic woman to serve in the upper chambers after winning a special runoff election for the seat of Sen. Mario Gallegos. She has served three terms in the Texas Senate and has been a fighter for veterans, immigrant rights, women's health and access to healthcare, Relationship privacy, anti-human trafficking, and school bus safety.


As an active member of the Houston community Senator Garcia has served on over 25 community boards and commissions, including the San Jacinto Girl Scouts, the Houston Hispanic Forum, the American Leadership Forum, Battleship Texas and the Museum of Fine Arts - Houston. She has truly dedicated her life to the community.


Sen. Sylvia Garcia was received numerous awards; notably, she was named the "Humanitarian of the Year", and received the Houston GLBT Political Caucus Eleanor Tinsley Award.
