Over the last year, I have worked with an amazing team to build and launch Sunrise, a movement of young people to stop climate change and create millions of good jobs in the process. We're building an army of young people to make climate change an urgent priority across America, end the corrupting influence of fossil fuel executives on our politics, and elect leaders who stand up for the health and wellbeing of all people.
After years of growing the youth climate movement in Virginia, I knew we needed a bolder strategy to grow our movement and rise to the unique political moment we find ourselves in, especially as the impacts of climate change grow stronger every year. Months of weekend retreats and deep thinking turned into Sunrise. We launched in April and it has been a sprint ever since!
This past November, over 1000 young people gathered in 25 cities and towns to dedicate Climate Legacy Time Capsules and commit to fighting for a better future as the the first UN climate talks of the Trump era came to a close. We wrote our own climate legacy and let our politicians know that if they continue to drag us backwards, we will be the generation to step up and lead our country forward. Now, we are gearing up for 2018, where we’ll work on elections across the country to kick out politicians in the pocket of fossil fuel CEOs, and elect leaders who will fight for all of us and our shared home.
Support from our friends and community keeps us going. In 2018 we’ll be starting multiple movement houses and also launching our “student debt fund” to support hundreds of young people to go all-in to work full-time with Sunrise for 6-months in the lead up to the election. Donations will help us rent houses, travel, and reach hundreds of young people to invite them into this movement.
It’s a joy to work everyday with the passionate community of committed young people. Thank you for your support!
