Elon Musk is buying elections. And now there’s a new documentary holding him accountable.
Alex Gibney’s Musk is heading into U.S. theaters next month after a searing festival run. The film puts Musk’s businesses, his White House role, and his DOGE operation on the screen, including a warning that data obtained by DOGE could be used to interfere with the midterms.
Musk called the movie a hit piece and sent lawyers before it premiered. The public record is already there. He was the largest political spender of the 2024 election, putting more than $278 million behind Republican candidates. That spending was four times what he paid in annual federal income taxes from 2013 to 2018.
One hundred billionaire families poured $2.6 billion into federal elections in 2024. By March of this year, 50 of those families had already put $433 million into the midterms. Musk led the list, then authorized another $100 million to $120 million for the final stretch.
That money is an investment in a rigged tax code. Americans for Tax Fairness Action Fund follows it: who writes the checks, which politicians collect them, and what tax breaks that spending is designed to protect.
