Together with our families, colleagues, and communities, we’ve been closely watching as the COVID-19 crisis has developed. This pandemic is highlighting the deep cracks in our support systems - the gaps Emergent Fund grantees know all too well. But it's also displaying our ability to care for and nurture one another. Many of us are grappling with how to help, and the philanthropic sector is in a unique position to make an impact today.
While the administration focuses dollars on shoring up the existing, flawed system by bailing out large corporations, we have a radically different vision of our future - one that recognizes that our people power is what keeps us safe. We’re focused on getting resources to the organizations and communities most in need of support during the current COVID-19 crisis. The most effective way to do that is by supporting grassroots organizing. That’s why we’re proud to announce the People’s Bailout Fund.
Emergent Fund’s role in the philanthropic ecosystem is to move resources quickly, but we know this moment will shift our work for the long-haul. This is no time to play small. We’re committed to acting swiftly and responsively with deep trust in Indigenous, Black, and people of color organizers and those closest to the harm. Over the coming weeks, we’ll be gathering resources and moving money quickly to the organizations, collectives, and mutual aid project across the country- the ones that need bailing out the most.
