In her first year in office, the legislature passed a historic budget, raising taxes on the wealthy to secure the biggest investment in public education in generations; legalized recreational marijuana, with clear guidelines to create a diverse industry that repairs the harms of the War on Drugs; protected tenants from eviction and homeowners from foreclosure, and created a first-in-the-nation unemployment insurance fund for undocumented workers. Emily secured $40 million in city investment to transform McGuinness Boulevard, one of the most dangerous streets for pedestrians in the city. And she stood up to an abusive Governor and helped bring international attention to the humanitarian crisis at Rikers Island.
