Dear friends,
As we prepare to enter 2017, the story of Chanukah -- of resistance against tyranny, of holding on to light in times of darkness -- seems particularly resonant. Donald Trump will soon be taking office on a platform of racism, Islamophobia, xenophobia, and opposition to basic civil rights. He's appointed Bannon, a white supremacist and anti-Semite, as his chief strategist. He's appointed Jeff Sessions -- who was considered too racist in the 1980s to be appointed as a federal judge -- as attorney general. And he's appointed David Friedman, a staunch opponent of Palestinian statehood and supporter of settlement expansion, as ambassador to Israel.
During this time, I am more grateful than ever to be a member of IfNotNow. IfNotNow is a grassroots organization of young Jews working to end the American Jewish community's support for the occupation and to support freedom and dignity for all. While mainstream American Jewish organizations have been largely silent in the aftermath of Trump's election, IfNotNow was one of the first Jewish organizations to speak out against Trump's bigotry. IfNotNow is leading the charge against this new wave of anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, racism, and misogyny sweeping our country. I am both proud and profoundly reassured to be a part of this thoughtful, flexible, and powerful movement.
This is why I'm asking you to make a donation to support IfNotNow. Since Trump's election, we've expanded enormously, adding hundreds of new members and holding our largest actions and trainings ever. Luckily, we planned for this -- we have a structure that's designed to expand, allowing us to grow and respond rapidly to current events. But as we grow, we need more funding: to rent space for trainings, to buy materials for banners, to pay modest stipends to the folks working full-time for the movement. As a member-based movement, we rely entirely on grassroots fundraising to support our operations.
I've set a goal of raising $100 by the end of Chanukah. This means that any amount you can donate -- even just $10 -- makes a huge difference in helping me reach my goal. $100 doesn't sound like much, but nearly 100 people in IfNotNow have volunteered to raise $100 each by the end of Chanukah -- so together, you're helping us raise $10,000.
Thank you so much for your support. Happy Chanukah, and may we all be inspired to resist tyranny in the coming year.
