Serving District 15 in the South Dakota Legislature has been the honor of my life and career. But the work isn't done.
That's why I'm running to become the next State Senator for District 15.
In two years of service, I've worked hard to protect our educational system, defend the vulnerable, secure healthcare access for every South Dakotan, and put forward real solutions to issues that have been ignored for too long.
Together, we've built a record to be proud of. Here are just some of our wins across two sessions:
- Prime-sponsored four new laws — We expanded access to free birth certificates and non-driver IDs for homeless youth, reconnected more South Dakotans with their unclaimed property, and guaranteed equal access to government proceedings for every South Dakotan, including Lakota language speakers.
- Earned JCA leadership — As a freshman lawmaker, I earned appointment as chair of the Medicaid Workgroup and secured landmark funding for federally qualified health centers and critical access hospitals across South Dakota, including our own Falls Community Health here in District 15.
- Secured over $6.4 million in budget wins — I brought motion sheets that cared for children in poverty, protected critical access hospitals and health centers, and covered unfunded liabilities paid by our schools to support our highest-need special education students, all issues that are soundly supported.
- Defended open government, vital public media, our public schools, and our veterans — I played a vital role in stopping SDPB cuts (twice), defeating costly school voucher schemes that would have blown our state budget wide open, and protected Veterans Service Officers from harmful cuts proposed by the Noem administration.
- Led meaningful reform — I continue to lead on mental health service gaps and economic development accountability, while earning bipartisan respect as a trusted voice on everything from government accountability to Medicaid services to maternal and infant mortality, brokering several bipartisan wins.
- Helped architect South Dakota's first Unclaimed Property Trust Fund — I was at the table to protect and preserve South Dakotans' unclaimed property and ensure it was no longer an unfunded liability on the state balance sheet. I brought a fiscally responsible voice to the table to help tip the scale on landmark policy.
Two incredible years of impact down. But more to go.
Every day, I work hard, work smart, and work together to make life better for our district and our state.
I'm ready to build communities and create opportunities for every South Dakotan in the South Dakota Senate.
In service,
Representative Erik Muckey
