The Center for Educational Growth, Inc.

You're invited to our Red Carpet Film Premiere at Caribbean Cinema on December 20, 2024 @ 6pm

We would like to introduce you to The Film Over Gun Violence summer student film program that completed its first pilot summer this past summer, 2024. The teen and young adult program is a complete hands-on indie filmmaking experience focused on bringing awareness to gun violence in our community. From the story to the shoot, participants ages 13-28 create their very own short film in collaborative sessions in small class environments to maximize the attention the students deserve. Participants learn real-life skills and techniques used in film, broadcasting, and communication industries.

The Center for Educational Growth (CFEG), Blue Tarp Productions and CMCArts collaborated to offer this pilot program of the first VI film training and education humanities focused campaign to combat gun violence. We're changing the scene, and using film to address the gun homicide rate in the USVI. CFEG utilized literature, research, stats, understanding of Virgin Islands culture, community, social system, and governance, and taught students to turn these subject matters into a short film. Blue Tarp Productions and Team Faktornize are the organizing local indie film team that instructed the students on the technical details of shooting a film; from camera use, to sound, lighting and engineering, and CMCArts provided the location, and the script writing workshops facilitated by the CMCArts Artist-in-Residence program’s exuberant theatre professional, Selentia Q. Moore.

The students did it! Two short films were produced; one from the teen group and one from the young adult group and we would love to give the students, their family and friends and the community the gift of a red-carpet film screening reveal on the big screen. The students worked hard. They worked together for weeks, building a story, writing a script and them filming the production. Teen film directors emerged, technical skills were honed, friendships were deepened, and the best part, self-confidence, self-empowerment vision, patience, and determination was gained.

We are very excited to invite you to the VIP Red Carpet Screening of the two films "Fall" and "Bullet Proof Dreams"! Come join us as we celebrate the achievement of the young Virgin Islanders. There are limited seats, so please RSVP as soon as you can. See you at the movies!
