For nearly two decades as a State Representative, La Shawn has protected access to healthcare, defended Social Security and Medicare, and fought to make government work for people who do the right thing and still struggle to get ahead. La Shawn knows that Social Security is not a talking point. In Illinois’ 7th District, it is often the difference between stability and crisis. He has consistently opposed benefit cuts, privatization schemes, and efforts to raise the retirement age. He believes Social Security is an earned benefit, not charity, and that seniors deserve dignity after a lifetime of work.

On healthcare, La Shawn has stood up for Medicare, Medicaid, and expanded access to care because strong families depend on healthy parents and grandparents. He understands that when healthcare costs rise and benefits fall short, families are forced to step in, often at great personal cost.
