FP Action Network: Tammy Duckworth (IL-Sen)

Tammy Duckworth is a retired Army National Guard Lieutenant and junior Illinois senator elected in 2016. Born in Bangkok, Thailand, she comes from a long line of service members. While working toward a Ph.D. in political science at Northern Illinois University she was deployed to Iraq in 2004. After losing her legs in combat, she became an advocate for wounded warriors. In 2006, Duckworth was appointed Director of the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs, and in 2009 President Obama appointed her to be Assistant Secretary for Public and Intergovernmental Affairs at the Department of Veterans Affairs. In 2012, she was elected to Illinois’ 8th Congressional District.
