Brenda is a proud transgender woman who has made her presence felt in Vermont politics and policy. Her Franklin-6 district, which includes the small towns of Bakersfield, Fairfield and Fletcher, is currently represented by a Republican who’s seen as vulnerable.
For the past several years, Brenda has been an advocate for the LGBTQIA+ Alliance in the Vermont Statehouse. She lobbied for bills adding a third gender marker to Vermont driver’s licenses and birth certificates, mandating gender-neutral restrooms in all public buildings, and creating standards for social equity studies in the public schools. She has lobbied for a wide range of progressive policies including paid family leave, a $15-an-hour minimum wage, and universal primary care.
Brenda was a close adviser to Christine Hallquist who, in 2018, became the first transgender major-party candidate in American history.
Brenda is also active in Bakersfield, serving as zoning administrator, Justice of the Peace, and member of the town’s Selectboard. She is vice chair of a nonprofit building a universal high-speed broadband network in northwest Vermont.
