Shayla has been an effective, and fearless leader on the Prince George's County Board of Education.
Here are a few of her accomplishments in office:
- Led initiative for Equity Learning Hubs. Shayla collaborated with the administration to design a program which supported some of the district's most vulnerable students at the height of the pandemic with in-person instructional support. The program passed unanimously and has supported over 1,300 students. In it's first year, 57% of participants having gains in Mathematics & 53% having gains in ELA . The program will now be expanded county-wide as a Saturday school in an effort to close learning gaps in elementary ELA and literacy.
- Revitalized the Parent and Community Advisory Council- led the charge to revamp the PCAC- a mechanism to increase community involvement in policy making. This initiative also passed unanimously and Shayla currently serves as Board Liaison to this 14 member Council.
- Organized initial Board Retreat in October 2021 in order to establish communication norms.
- Served as Academic Achievement Chair and spent the year focused on Literacy and Special Education Initiatives across the district.
- Passed budget amendment for Bridge to Excellence Schools- Passed a budget amendment which allocated $10M for under-performing schools within our district. Funds were used to support tutoring initiatives and extended day programs.
- Initiated first-ever partnership between Blacks In Government and a public school district in order to provide students with jobs in the federal government. https://www.fox5dc.com/news/new-pgcps-program-will-help-students-get-government-jobs
- Worked with Parks and Planning to implement a county-wide Saturday Academy focused on Math and Reading Literacy Over 600 families attended the program weekly starting this past March.
