People of Red Mountain

Goal thermometer

An Indigenous-led fight has been growing in northwestern Nevada near the southern Oregon border, between the towns of McDermitt and Orovada in northern Nevada. Peehee Mu’huh was given the name as it was one of the locations where a community of Paiute peoples were attacked and killed by the American cavalry. Peehee Mu’huh means Rotten Moon in the Paiute language, and is known to some as Thacker Pass. The People of Red Mountain, a powerful group of Paiute and Shoshone people, have formed a camp to protest the protest mine and protect Peehee Mu’huh.

But lithium has been discovered at Peehee Mu'huh, and with the growing incentives for buying electric vehicles powered by lithium batteries, the Trump administration and now then Biden Administration sees Peehee Mu'huh as an opportunity to make money, and they will begin removing the remains of the Tribal ancestors who lost their lives on that tragic day.

That is why we're partnering with Fifth Sun’s Project to host a Solidarity with Peehee Mu’huh event, this Saturday at 12pm at the Las Vegas Indian Center. Join us to learn more about how you can help protect Peehee Mu’huh. through cultural dance (including Calpulli Tlatelolco), musical performances, and a film screening of American Outrage, with food vendors and merchants present.

Supporters of the struggle against this proposed lithium mine are coming from all over the state and country, a gracious donation would be appreciated so that the camp can be stocked with supplies especially during these cold temperatures.

This proposed lithium mine is being advertised as a solution to the United States environmental crisis and a way to power the nation. While lithium is used across many “green-technologies”, we cannot sacrifice one group of people over any other group of people. Nevada and the United States should instead be looking to invest in meaningful and sustainable forms of mineral and material recycling, rather than destroying communities, sacred and historically important locations and ruining the immediate environment of nearby vicinities.
