I don't usually get involved in Democratic primaries, but I make an exception in some cases. These are Democratic candidates who I strongly recommend supporting for various reasons.
Wahls first came to my attention way back in 2011 when, as a 19-yr old college student, he gave a powerful speech in defense of marriage equality on the floor of the Iowa state House of Representatives (Wahls grew up w/two mothers). I became an instant fan of his passion and eloquence in defense of human rights.
He was later elected to the Iowa state senate himself and has served there since.
McDonald is a former judge & current Oakland County prosecutor. She made national news after the Oxford High School shooting when she successfully prosecuted not just the shooter but also his parents for enabling him.
Johnson flipped a GOP-held state Senate seat in 2018, and among other accomplishments spearheaded Senate Bill 1296 which dramatically improved the ACA for nearly 4 million Texans, helping it pass unanimously in an ACA-hostile red state. He also composed music for Dragon Ball Z before entering politics.
As someone who cares deeply about making healthcare coverage more comprehensive, affordable & transparent, I've been impressed w/state Sen. Fine's long history of pushing legislation forward to improve all of these.
If elected, I suspect she'll be a great partner with her fellow Illinois colleague, Rep. Lauren Underwood, who I'm also a huge fan of (assuming Underwood doesn't run for U.S. Senate instead).
Speaking of Rep. Underwood, she's apparently being primaried despite her being one of the most effective Democrats in Congress since she flipped a red seat blue in 2018. I'm a huge fan of Underwood, a former nurse who has worked tirelessly for sensible healthcare reform policy; she has my full support.
I've known Jeremy for nearly 20 years and have watched him advance from being personal aide to then-Southfield, MI Mayor Brenda Lawrence to becoming a Southfield City Councilman to State Representative to State Senator. Along the way, Jeremy has shown a true love of public service and providing good government.
Sacks caught my attention with his aggressive, not-screwing around campaign launch (complete with a killer campaign slogan), but he impressed me more with his detailed liveblogging of Supreme Court hearings while campaigning.
I first got to know Shadia when she ran for State Representative for my district several years ago. She's a Syrian-American immigrant who has lived in Southeast Michigan for decades. Growing up under a brutal dictatorship, she's dedicated to fighting to defend democracy & civil rights here in the United States.
I've been friends with Jon for nearly 30 years and no one is more passionate about doing the right thing. He's a tireless advocate for gun safety and improving the world and has no patience for fools.
