GiveSmartGND: Down Ballot Candidates Who Will Stop Fossil Fuels + Fight for the Green New Deal

There’s no question that defeating Donald Trump on Election Day is the top priority for protecting our environment and climate. To address the climate crisis at scale, though, we will need allies and climate champions at every level of government.

On November 3, 2020, we have an opportunity to win elections that will help us:

• Secure progressive majorities in more than three state legislatures that can pass major climate and Green New Deal policy;
• Elect champions in dozens of municipalities that can stop new fossil fuel development; and
• Elect public-utility commissioners that aren’t bankrolled by incumbent utilities that are blocking moves toward a clean energy economy.

This fall, Lead Locally & Data for Progress are teaming up to support down-ballot candidates who are Green New Deal champions committed to fighting for progressive climate policy.

Using our expertise and data, we’ve identified twelve races with significant implications for our handling of the climate crisis. While candidates who are climate deniers have access to endless resources from the fossil fuel billionaires, our slate of climate champions are counting on small-dollar donors like you. These races will likely be decided by razor-thin margins—think hundreds of votes, not thousands—so our organizing and our financial contributions will go a long way.

Progressive champions are running for key state and local offices. They are diverse. They are the next generation of leadership. And they are inspiring.
