Using disposable items is easy, but it creates trash for landfills and utilizes non-renewable energy and resources. Even paper plates can't be recycled! When we bring people together for a fundraiser or other event, we want to support Los Alamos Democrats AND support core Democratic values. Let's make an easy change to reduce our environmental impact.
We have a goal to raise at least $1,000 for our GO GREEN initiative to purchase reusable items.
We have researched options and identified a good intersection of cost and class with plain tempered glass plates and bowls and reusable forks and spoons to use at events where otherwise we would create huge amounts of waste with disposable paper and plastic.
Volunteers will help wash and transport the dishes when needed (another fantastic, low-key way for people to get involved). We will incorporate the extra steps into our event planning, and before long, the easy way will also be the green way!
Stretch goals:
At $1200, we will purchase specialized storage to keep the plates and bowls in great condition and easy to transport.
At $1500, we will purchase portable bins for recycling and composting at events.
Any money raised in excess of our needs (or between stretch goals) will help fund our headquarters and other regular operations this year.
