Tennessee has long been a battleground in the fight for gender equality, playing a pivotal role in 1920 by casting the decisive vote to ratify the 19th Amendment and securing women’s suffrage. Yet, more than a century later, the struggle continues as women in the state face ongoing challenges.
The Equal Rights Amendment gained national attention in the 1970s as states moved to ratify a constitutional amendment affirming gender equality. While Tennessee initially ratified the ERA in 1972, it later rescinded its support—a decision advocates have worked tirelessly to overturn. Today, a new generation of leaders and activists is reigniting the movement to enshrine the ERA in the Tennessee constitution.
Join Rep. Behn and special guests for the ERA campaign kick-off on January 9th, 2025.
