Support immediate community-led flood relief AND long-term grassroots advocacy and community organizing in support of impacted communities.
Another record-breaking disaster has hit our islands. Families have lost homes. Neighborhoods are underwater. People are stepping up to help each other, but the need is urgent.
We know what works. From fires to floods, trusted local leaders and organizations reach people fastest and stay the longest. They do more than respond through mutual aid. They build the experience and network and push for the policy change needed to prevent the next disaster.
The Hawai‘i Grassroots Flood Recovery Fund, sponsored by Our Hawai‘i Action, is supporting immediate relief and long-term recovery. We are working directly with community leaders, experienced organizers, and elected officials to get resources to those on the ground in the hardest-hit communities, and supporting them to strategize for how to carry the work forward long after the cameras leave.
In 2023, Our Hawai‘i and our partners led a powerful, community-driven response to the Lāhainā wildfires. That work helped deliver real support and build lasting influence and policy change for Maui’s most impacted communities, and stand up community organizations that are still around responding to today’s disaster.
Those same organizers are now mobilizing mutual aid and relief across West Maui and O‘ahu’s most impacted areas, like Waialua, Hale‘iwa, Nānākuli, and elsewhere.
But relief alone is not enough.
The same plantation system that left Lāhainā dry and vulnerable to fire is leaving other communities flooded and at risk. Two sides of the same double-edged sword. For generations, water was diverted, streams were controlled, and ecosystems were reshaped for corporate profit. That history is still shaping the disasters we face today.
This is why water matters. It is why Hawaiians and environmental advocates have fought for decades, from the Waiāhole water wars to Nā Wai ʻEhā, to restore streams and protect our communities.
Now, climate change is intensifying both extremes. Stronger storms. Longer droughts. Higher risk. The old systems are failing, and our communities are left to carry the consequences.
Recovery will take years. It must be led by the people, not by those looking to profit from disaster.
Your donation helps families right now. It will also help community leaders advocate for long term-climate resilience, restore balance to our water systems, and grow the community needed to protect Hawai‘i for generations to come.
Give today. Stand with our communities. Help us rebuild now and reshape our community for a better future.
