In the US, Black and Brown patients have experienced categorically worse treatment and health outcomes since the medical institution’s inception. Despite research advancements, health outcomes, experiences, and trauma have not improved as they should - they’ve worsened. (KFF: Ndugga 2023).

Structural racism is baked into the health system resulting in shorter life expectancies and higher infant and maternal death rates among BIPOC patients compared to other racial counterparts. (AHE: Blackstock 2023) The data is clear, abundant, and unacceptable.

We know that when we eradicate inequity, health outcomes will improve for everyone. To do so, we need to:

  • Invest in the well-being and leadership of BIPOC health professionals in the US.
  • Scale community-led, community-based health initiatives that provide dignified, life-saving wellness care.
  • Fuel conditions for equity innovation across health systems.

ABOUT THE HEALTH EQUITY COLLECTIVE

The Health Equity Collective is a brain trust of influential BIPOC leaders; a community for healing, belonging, and radical imagination; and a movement of liberated doers practicing wellness. Leveraging lived experience and multidisciplinarity, we breathe hope, creativity, and liberation into systems governed by white supremacy culture.  To democratize equity learning, HEC brings together emergent and existing leaders across disciplines, health sectors, and states. Our community of 120+ ambassadors of health justice aged 17-71 include academics, designers, health professionals, and activists who have co-created over 50 interdisciplinary and intersectional health equity learning assets. And also, incubated, scaled or supported 33+ health equity initiatives in communities, organizations, and health institutions.
